Stargazer Papillons
Socializing Your
Papillon!
Socialization of your new family member is essential to his/her
overall well being. The breeder of your Papillon should have provided many
opportunities for the litter to experience sights and sounds unfamiliar to them.
Now it's your turn to continue to expose your fur baby to the world around
him/her. Spending this time now will help to make your Papillon
well-rounded, better adjusted, and a wonderful companion for many years to come.
Here you will find suggestions, ideas, tips, and information to
assist you with the socialization process.
Many Papillon breeders use the Rule of 7. This technique
recommends that the litter is exposed to 7 different people, 7 different
surfaces, 7 different noises, 7 different places, etc. by the time they are 7
weeks old.
Most Papillon breeders move the litter to an area of their home
where all the activity takes place - usually the kitchen area - when the puppies
are a few weeks old. This insures additional exposure with noises and the
hustle and bustle of activity.
Now you have your new family member and you're probably thinking,
hmm, what should I do to continue the social experience? A fun way for you
to continue this process would be to print out a copy of the "Socialization
Scavenger Hunt". This is a great tool that many dog trainers use as a
helpful guide for the new dog owner. This is in a PDF file format for your
convenience.
Obedience
classes are a fantastic way to provide socialization and training for
your Papillon in a controlled environment. Depending on the age of your
Pap, you would either enroll in Puppy Kindergarten or Beginning Obedience.
These classes will not only provide additional stimulation, but also instruction
on beginning obedience skills. These basic skills (sit, down, stay, come)
will teach your fur baby manners.
Take your Papillon and visit the park,
a lake, or on a walk around your neighborhood.
Play dates at a local dog park or training center can be fun experiences
too. A word of caution - always be aware of other dogs around you.
Other owners may not be carefully watching their own fur kids. Larger dogs
sometimes look at our Papillons as "prey". We all want our Paps to
have fun and experience new things, but we also have to be mindful of potential
dangers.
A final thought about socialization....
Never force your pup to take part in a new experience.
Encourage with a happy voice and treats or a toy, but let the ultimate choice to
participate in the experience be your Pap's. Patience, encouragement, and
a loving attitude on your part will provide a secure feeling for your Papillon
and they in turn will participate more readily.
